Tables inside a note

A table is a grid of rows and columns under a note's text. Use it for a few rows of facts that belong to one note, such as the quotes for one venue. Each note holds one table, and the table is part of that note.

Add a table

Choose Format ▸ Table with the note selected or being edited. The note gets a grid of three columns: a header row and two empty rows. The caret goes to the first header cell. The same grid comes from / then Table, which lists it as “A grid of rows and columns under this note”.

The caption is the note's own text. The grid sits under it.

A table can also come from text you type. Type a header line such as | Venue | Price | as the whole note, with the caret at its end, and press Return. The note becomes a table with those headers and one empty row. Shift-Return does not convert it. A whole Markdown table typed the same way, with its rows on separate lines, becomes a table with its rows.

Fill in the cells

Click a cell, or select it with the arrow keys, to edit it. The keys below move between cells and finish an edit.

Tab
Moves to the next cell. In the last cell it adds a row at the end and moves into it.
Shift-Tab
Moves to the previous cell.
Return
Moves to the cell below. In the last body row it adds a row at the end.
Shift-Return
Starts a new line inside the cell.
Esc
Ends the edit and gives the keyboard back to the note's caption.
⌘Bor⌘Ior⇧⌘C
Bold, italic and inline code, on the selected text in a cell.
TabTab in the last cell adds a row and keeps typing.

Add, remove and align rows and columns

Right-click a cell for its menu. Insert Row Above, Insert Row Below, Insert Column Left and Insert Column Right add to the grid. Delete Row and Delete Column remove the row or column of the cell. Align Left, Align Center and Align Right set the alignment of the whole column, as one Undo step named Align Column. Remove Table takes the grid away.

Two bars do the most common additions. The bar under the grid adds a row at the end, and the bar beside it adds a column at the right. The header row cannot be deleted or moved. Delete Column is off when only one column is left, and an insert is off at the limit.

Move a row or column

With a cell selected, Format ▸ Move Row Up, Move Row Down, Move Column Left and Move Column Right move its row or column one place. They use ⌥⇧⌘↑, ⌥⇧⌘↓, ⌥⇧⌘← and ⌥⇧⌘→. The first body row cannot move above the header. You can also drag a row by the handle in the gutter at its left, or a column by the handle in the strip above the grid.

⌥⇧⌘↑The row moves; the header stays first.

Limits

  • A table has at most 64 columns and 2,000 rows. The menu items that would go past either limit are off.
  • A note holds one table. Format ▸ Table on a note that has one removes it.
  • Cells hold text. They do not calculate.
  • The table is not the Table view. Its rows are the note's own grid, not the notes below it.
