Fields
A field is a named value on a note, such as Due, Status or Budget. A field says what a note has. It does not change what kind of note it is; a supertag does that.
- Add
- Note ▸ Add Field…, the page’s “…” menu ▸ Add Field, or the
>list while typing - Edit a value
- Click the value in the note’s row or on its page
- Change the type
- Click the field’s type icon and choose from eleven types
- Markdown copy
- A
fields:block in the front matter and a Fields section in the body
Add a field to a note
Add Field… has no shortcut. It opens a popover with a Field name box, a Type menu listing the eleven types, and a Use existing field… button that picks a field the workspace already has. Choose Add field to finish.
- On a note, the field is added to that note only. Its value starts empty, and the note’s page shows Add value… beside it.
- On a supertag’s page, the field is added to the supertag. Every note with the supertag gets it, and the popover says how many notes that is. Its button reads Apply.
- Typing
>opens the field list. At the very start of an empty note it always does; elsewhere it does not open inside code, a link or a word, or before a space or a digit. Choosing a field adds it to the note and opens its value at the caret. See Links, supertags and fields as you type.
Set and change a value
Click a value to edit it. A text, number, URL or email value edits in place, in its row. Return saves, Tab saves and moves to the next field, ⇧Tab moves to the previous one, and Esc discards the change. Clicking away from an in-row edit saves it.
- Date and timestamp values open a calendar and a text box. Done saves. The quick buttons are Today, Tomorrow and Next week.
- Option and Note values open a picker. Choose a row to save it. Clear value removes the value.
- Tags values open a token box. Return or a comma makes a tag, and Return with nothing typed saves.
- List values take one entry per line. ⌘Return saves.
- Checkbox values toggle in the row, with one click.
- Clear removes the value. The field stays on the note as empty, so a default value does not come back.
Input that Superliner cannot read stays in the editor and is explained under it, so you can correct it. If the value changed somewhere else while you were editing, your input is kept beside the current value, with Save anyway and Discard.
Fix a value marked Needs review
A value is marked Needs review when it does not fit its field’s type. The row says “Needs review: this value doesn’t fit the field type.” and offers Fix…. Fix opens the editor for the field’s type, filled with the text that was stored, so you can correct it or clear it.
A value can need review after a type change, when an option it used moves to Trash, or when a Tags value holds something other than tags. A value that names an option the field no longer has shows as Removed option and is marked Needs review.
Rename, remove and trash a field
On a supertag’s page, click a field’s name to open Field Settings, or choose Field Settings… from its type menu. Renaming there renames the field everywhere it is used. Field Settings also holds the type, the options, the default value, the Required setting and, for a Note field, the supertags a value may name.
Remove from #Supertag takes the field off that supertag only. The notes keep their values, which then show as the notes’ own fields. Move to Trash on a field in the browser moves the field’s note to Trash. Restore it from Trash to bring the field back.
Combine it
- Fields as table columnsEach field of a supertag’s notes becomes a column in the Table view. Click a header to sort, and type in the filter box above the table to narrow the rows.
- Searches on valuesA saved search can test a field for a value, or compare it with a number, date, text or option.
- Fields in child templatesA template note can carry a field value. Each note created from the template starts with that value.
- A field that follows a checkboxA supertag can keep a checkbox in step with an option or Yes/No field: checking the box sets the field, and setting the field moves the box.
Limits
- A Text field holds plain text. Bold, italics and links are not offered in a field’s value.
- A change to a field’s type applies to every note that has the field. Superliner shows the count before it changes anything.
- Clearing a value does not delete the field from the note.
