The supertag page and browser
A supertag’s page holds the notes that carry the supertag, and the settings that make it work: its fields, checkbox, behaviour, automations and child templates. The Supertags browser lists every supertag in one place.
- Open a page
- Click a supertag in the sidebar’s Supertags list, or choose Open in the browser
- Browse all
- Sidebar ▸ Supertags, or Note ▸ Manage Supertags…
- Settings
- The Configure disclosure under the page’s notes
- Markdown copy
- A file in the Schema folder with a Tag definition record
Read a supertag’s page
The row under the title lists the supertags this one extends, with Add parent supertag, the Color button and the Shortcut button.
Under the row, Notes with this supertag lists every note that carries it, and every note that carries a supertag extending it. Tick Direct only to list just the notes that have this supertag itself. The choice is a view preference and changes no note.
Below the notes, Configure opens a group of sections, open by default. Click its disclosure triangle to fold them away. In order, the sections are:
- Fields: the fields the supertag gives its notes, each with its type, its default value and its Required setting. Inherited fields are read-only here.
- Show as checkbox: whether notes given this supertag start with a checkbox.
- Behavior: New children get, Checkbox follows, Checked when and Unchecked when.
- Automations: the rules and command buttons. See Automations.
- Child templates: the notes added under a note that gets the supertag. See Child templates.
Browse and manage every supertag
Sidebar ▸ Supertags opens the Supertags browser. Its search field, Search supertags, narrows the list. New supertag makes one named New supertag, or New supertag 2 and so on when those names are taken.
- Pinned supertags are cards with a name, a description and a note count. A pinned supertag also appears in the sidebar’s Pinned list.
- All supertags are rows: the name as a coloured chip, what the supertag extends (Extends #Task), the note count, Open and a More actions menu.
- Fields lists every field with its type and how many supertags use it (Used by 2 supertags). Open shows the field’s own note.
A supertag row’s More actions menu has Open, Rename…, Color, Manage fields, Pin or Unpin, and Move to Trash. Manage fields opens the supertag’s fields and templates in the inspector. Moving a supertag to Trash follows the rules in Supertags.
Give a supertag a keyboard shortcut
The Shortcut button on a supertag’s page reads Add shortcut…, or once a shortcut is set, Shortcut and its keys with Change…. The shortcut applies that supertag to the selected notes, or to the note you are editing, as one undo step. Notes that already have the supertag are left alone.
Note ▸ Apply Supertag lists the supertags that have a shortcut, and you can change any shortcut in Settings ▸ Keyboard. It is stored with this workspace’s settings, not in the notes.
Combine it
- Pin a supertag to the sidebarPin #Project in the browser and it stays one click away in the sidebar’s Pinned list.
- A supertag as a tableA supertag can show its notes as a table. Direct only and Configure #Supertag work there too, so you can move from the notes to their settings.
- Search with a supertag chipIn ⌘K, type #Project and a space to search only the notes that have #Project or a supertag that extends it.
- A saved search from a chipSave as Search for #Project, from a chip’s menu, makes a saved search of the same notes.
Limits
- The browser lists supertags and fields. Saved searches are listed in the sidebar.
- A supertag in Trash is not listed in the sidebar or the browser until it is restored.
- Colours and pins are workspace settings, not note content.
