References
A reference puts one note in a second place. Both places show the same note, so an edit in one shows in the other, and the note keeps one page. Use a reference when a note belongs in two places, such as one person who attends two meetings.
- Paste as Reference
- Edit ▸ Paste as Reference, ⌥⌘V
- Add one
- Note ▸ Add Reference…, or type
@on an empty note - Remove one
- Remove Reference, from the row's menu
- Original
- Note ▸ Swap with Original
Paste notes as references
Select the notes you want, for example with Esc and ⇧↓, or by dragging across them, and copy them with ⌘C. Put the caret where the references should go and press ⌥⌘V or choose Edit ▸ Paste as Reference. Each note is added as a reference after the row you are editing, and one Undo removes them all. An ordinary paste always copies the notes instead.
Add a reference from the list
Choose Note ▸ Add Reference…. A note picker opens, with the same search as the ⌘K palette. Choose a note and it is added as a reference to the page you are on. Notes in Trash cannot be referenced.
Type a reference with @
Type @ and a note's name as the whole text of an empty note, then choose the note. The empty note becomes a reference to it, so no extra note is left behind. In a note that already has text, the same choice makes a link at the caret instead. See Links, supertags and fields as you type.
Remove a reference
On a reference, the Move to Trash command reads Remove Reference, in the row's menu and in Note. Removing takes away this one place, and the note it shows stays in its own place and in any other place it appears. Settings ▸ Editor has Warn when editing a reference, which asks before you change a note through one of its references.
Swap a reference with the original
Select a reference row and choose Note ▸ Swap with Original. The note's own row moves to the place of the reference, and the reference takes the note's old place. It is one Undo step.
Combine it
- People on several meetingsReference a person in each meeting note. The person is still one note, so an edit to it shows in every meeting.
- The original beside a referenceOpen the note in one pane and the reference's page in the other, so you can edit the note where it lives.
- Moving a referenceDrag a reference's bullet to move that row only. The note stays where it is in its other places.
- Trash and referencesTrash removes a note everywhere, but Remove Reference only takes one place away. Undo brings either back.
Limits
- Paste as Reference works only on notes copied with a block selection in this workspace session. Text copied from another app is pasted as text.
- A note cannot be referenced from inside itself, and notes in Trash cannot be referenced.
