A weekly review

A short review at the end of the week: a week page for your notes, two saved searches for what you finished and what is still open, and a second pane that shows the open tasks while you write.

Features
The week page, saved searches with Edited and Checkbox conditions, Open Beside, the palette, and Quick Capture
Keys
⇧⌘J captures lines. ⌥⌘← and ⌥⌘→ step by week. View ▸ Open Beside adds the second pane.
Time
About 15 minutes, once a week

Start from an empty workspace

  1. New workspace

Choose File ▸ New Workspace… (⇧⌘N) and make a new workspace in an empty folder.

  2. Make the task supertag

In the Inbox, press Return and type Write the agenda #task. Choose Create #task and press Return. Then open the task page, Sidebar ▸ Supertags, then click task, fold open Configure and turn on Show as checkbox.

  3. Add two more tasks

In the Inbox, press Return and type Send the invitations #task. Add Book the venue #task the same way. Each new task gets a box. Write the agenda had none, because the box was turned on after it was made. Put the caret in it and press ⌘Return once to add the box, and again to check it.

Make the two searches

  1. Finished this week

Choose File ▸ New Search Note. Click the title, type Done this week and press Return. Under Find notes matching, keep All. Click Add condition, choose Supertag and pick task. Click Add condition, choose Checkbox and pick Done. Click Add condition, choose Edited, and set the range menu to This week.

  2. Still open

Make a second search the same way, called Still open. Its conditions are Supertag is task, and Checkbox is Not done.

A checked task drops out of Still open. A task you checked last week drops out of Done this week, because its last edit is older than this week.

Write the week page

  1. Open this week

Choose Go ▸ This Week. The week's page opens, filed under the Journal. If you have not written in it yet, it is empty and nothing is saved.

  2. Write the wins

Type Wins, press Return, and write one note for each thing you finished. Press Tab to nest them under Wins.

  3. Step through the weeks

Press ⌥⌘← to open last week's page, and ⌥⌘→ for the next one. Press ⇧⌘D to go to today.

Keep Still open beside the week

  1. Open a second pane

On the week page, choose View ▸ Open Beside. A second pane opens to the right, showing the same page. Each pane keeps its own page and history.

  2. Make the right pane the one in use

Click the right pane once. A thin accent line marks the pane in use.

  3. Open the search there

In the sidebar, under Searches, click Still open. The search opens in the pane in use, beside the week page.

  4. Swap it

With the right pane still in use, click Done this week under Searches. That search replaces Still open in the right pane.

Capture the next week's lines

  1. Open Quick Capture

Choose File ▸ Quick Capture… (⇧⌘J). A small panel opens with a destination menu, set to Today or Inbox.

  2. Type the lines

Type one line for each item and press Return after each. Press ⌥Return to start a new line inside the panel. Press Esc to close it without adding anything.

Each line becomes one note.
