Pages and history

Any note can open as a page: its own full-width view, with its child notes below its title. Back and Forward move through the pages you have visited in the pane you are using, and the breadcrumbs above the title show where the page sits.

Open a note as a page

Click a note's bullet. The note opens as a page: its title is at the top and its child notes fill the page. A plain click opens the note. Shift-click and ⌘-click on the bullet select notes instead, and dragging the bullet moves the note.

The row becomes the page. Its breadcrumbs show where it was.

The same page opens from the palette with Return or a double-click, from the Go menu's Inbox and Trash entries, and from the right-click menu of a row. Open Beside opens it in a second pane instead.

Go back and forward

Go ▸ Back is ⌘[ and Go ▸ Forward is ⌘]. A two-finger horizontal swipe on a page goes back or forward, when the swipe setting for moving between pages is on in System Settings. Back returns to the note you had selected on that page and to the scroll position you left. Going to a different page after going back clears the forward history.

⌘[Back returns the page as you left it.

Each pane has its own history. With a second pane open, Back and Forward act on the pane you are using, and a swipe acts on the pane under the pointer.

The breadcrumb row starts with a house, then the note's ancestors separated by chevrons, and ends with the page itself, which is not a link. Click an ancestor to open it, and that move goes into the history. In a narrow pane the middle segments collapse into “…”, and that button's menu lists them.

The title is editable in place. Click it, or choose Edit Title from the page menu. Press Return in the title to start a note under it. On an empty page that starts a draft, which disappears if you leave it empty.

The … button on the breadcrumb row opens the page menu. For a note it lists, in this order: Add Field, Edit Title, Tags and Fields, Show as Table (or Show as Outline once the note is a table), Show Fields (or Hide Fields), Open Beside (or Close Beside Pane), and a last entry for the page: Move to Trash for a note, Restore for a note in Trash, or Delete Supertag… for a supertag. The Trash page adds Restore All and Empty Trash…. The Created and Edited times sit at the foot of the menu, dimmed, and show a relative time for the last day and a date after that.

Notes made before this version show no times until they are edited.

Limits

  • The Trash and Schema pages are built-in pages, and they do not take new notes.
  • A day with no page yet opens as an empty page. Nothing is written until you type in it.
