Select and move notes

Select notes to move, cut, copy, delete, indent or tag several at once. Select from the keyboard with Escape and the arrow keys, or with the mouse. Move a note by dragging its bullet, with Move Note… or with the keyboard.

Select from the keyboard

Press Esc while you are typing in a note. The note is selected as a whole, and its row is highlighted. From there the keys work on the selection:

↑or↓
Move the selection to the note above or below
⇧↑or⇧↓
Extend the selection up or down
HomeorEnd
Select the first or the last note on the page
Return
Edit the selected note again
Backspace
Move the selected notes to Trash, as one Undo step
Esc
Clear the selection

Typing a letter with a note selected starts editing that note and types the letter in it.

Esc⇧ ↓Escape selects the note; Shift-Down adds the next one.

Select with the mouse

  • Press in the empty space beside or after a note's text, or in the left gutter, or below the last note. Drag down or up to select every note you cross, at any depth.
  • Shift-click a note to select every note between it and the anchor. ⌘-click adds one note to the selection or removes it.
  • Drag from the text of one note into another row. The selection grows into one covering the notes at that level.
  • Click the bullet to open the note's page.

Shift-↓ on the last line of a note's text starts a text selection across notes. You can copy that text. Any other key clears it first, so it never changes a note.

Move notes with the keyboard

Press ⇧⌘↑ to move the note being edited or selected up, and ⇧⌘↓ to move it down. A move can cross from one parent to another. Several selected notes move together when they are consecutive siblings.

Indent, Outdent, Move Up and Move Down are also in the Note menu. Tab and Shift-Tab indent and outdent a note as you type, as described in Outline basics.

Drag a bullet

Press on a note's bullet and drag. Drop it between two rows to reorder, or on a note to make it that note's child. The move is one Undo step. A reference moves only that appearance, and the note it points to stays where it is.

Drop notes on the sidebar too. On Trash, they go to Trash. On a supertag row, they take that supertag. On a page row, they move under that page as its last notes.

Drag the bullet to reorder.

Move a note to another page

Choose Note ▸ Move Note… or press ⇧⌘M. A destination picker opens with three groups: the Workspace tree, Pinned pages and Recent pages. Type in its search to find a page by name. Choose the destination, then click Move, or Move and leave a reference.

Move and leave a reference keeps a reference to the moved note at its old place, so the note is still shown there. It is offered only when every moving note is an ordinary note, not a reference. The move is one Undo step.

The row menu

Right-click a note to open its menu. A click outside the current selection selects that note alone, as in Finder. If the note is in the selection, the menu acts on the whole selection.

  • Open, and Open Beside, which splits the page area
  • Copy Link to Note, for one note, Duplicate and Paste as Reference
  • Tags and Fields
  • Add Checkbox or Mark as Done, and Remove Checkbox, when they apply
  • Indent, Outdent, Move Up and Move Down
  • Expand or Collapse, Expand All Inside and Collapse All Inside, for a note with children
  • Swap with Original, for a reference, and Move Note…
  • Move to Trash, last. A reference reads Remove Reference, which never trashes the note it shows.
Menus show the keys of your keyboard layout. This one was captured on a Turkish layout: on a US layout, Indent Note and Outdent Note read ⌥⌘] and ⌥⌘[.

Combine it

Limits

  • Indent and Outdent work on several notes only when they are consecutive siblings.
  • Move Note… cannot leave a reference behind when a selected note is itself a reference.
