Choosing a view
Every page can show its notes in one of seven views, and one page can keep several views at once. A view changes how a page shows its notes. It never changes the notes, their outline order or the Markdown copy.
- Where
- View ▸ Show as, the menu of a view tab, or View options
- Keys
- None by default. Keyboard Shortcuts can assign one.
- Saved
- With the workspace, for each page. Not in the notes or the Markdown copy.
- Undo
- A view change is not an edit, so Undo does not reverse it
Switch a page to another view
Open the page, then choose the view in any of these places. The page changes at once, and every window showing it follows.
Use the menu bar
View ▸ Show as Outline, Show as Table, Show as Cards, Show as Calendar or Show as List. Lanes and Side menu are not on the View menu.
Use the tab menu
Open the menu of the active view tab and choose Show as. It lists the views this page offers, and the current one is checked.
Use View options
Click View options, then choose the view under View as. Lanes and Side menu are listed here too.
Use the page menu
The page's … menu has Show as Table, or Show as Outline while the page is a table. On a supertag page the way back reads Show Fields and Templates.
Which views each page offers
| View | Offered on | Sort and filter | Edit in place | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Outline | Ordinary pages, the Inbox, the Journal, supertag pages and saved searches | Not applied. View options still lists Sort and Filter here, and they change nothing. | Yes, on pages that hold notes | Writing and structure |
| Table | Ordinary pages, the Inbox, the Journal, supertag pages and saved searches. Not Trash or the Schema area. | Sort by a column, up to four keys. Filter by column text, and by up to 12 conditions. | Yes: names, checkboxes, Yes/No values and fields | Comparing fields across many notes |
| Cards | The same pages as Table | Sort and filter as Table. Group into columns by Done, a Yes/No field, an option field or supertag. | No text. Drag a card to another column to change its group value. Double-click opens it. | A board that sorts notes by a status |
| Calendar | The same pages as Table | Filter by any condition, in View options. Sort in View options offers Name only, though a sort set in Table or Cards still applies. No grouping. | No text. Drag a note to a day to change its date. | Notes that have a date |
| List | The same pages as Table | Filter and sort as Calendar, plus the Filter by name box, which is not saved. | Not in the list. The page of the chosen note beside it is editable. | Going through many notes with one page open |
| Lanes | Ordinary pages, the Inbox and the Journal only | Not applied. View options still lists Sort and Filter here, and they change nothing. | Yes: each lane is an outline with an editable title | Several parts of one page, each written as its own outline |
| Side menu | Ordinary pages, the Inbox and the Journal only | As List. The list holds the page's own children. | Not in the menu. The chosen child's page is editable. | Reading a page's children one at a time |
Offered on is where the View menu, the tab menu and View options list the view. Sort and filter describe what the view applies.
Sort and filter a view
The Filter, Sort and Group buttons sit in the view bar only on Table and Cards. On Calendar, List and Side menu, open View options: it has the Filter rows and a Sort menu. The Group menu there is dimmed with the note “Available in the Table view”.
On Calendar, List and Side menu the Sort menu lists Name only. The other columns come from the table, which is not on screen for these views. A sort set in the Table or Cards view still applies to them, because all views of a page share its sort and conditions.
Keep several views of one page
The tabs in the view bar are named views of one page. The first tab is All. Choose + to add a view. It starts in the current type and is named View, then View 2, View 3 and so on. A page keeps up to eight views.
Each tab's menu has Show as, Rename…, Duplicate and Delete. Delete is dimmed on the only tab. Choosing a tab makes it the active view, and the sort, filters, columns and grouping are the tab's own.
The two pictures show one page. Each tab keeps its own view, so the page can be an outline on one tab and a table on another.
What a view saves
A view's type, sort, filters, columns, column widths, grouping and Display settings are saved with the workspace, for that page. They are not written into any note, so the Markdown copy does not change. Backups carry them as a separate settings file.
Combine it
- A saved search as a tableA saved search can show its results as a table, with its conditions above. Sort the table by a column and the results follow that order.
- Tasks on a calendarChoose the task's due date field as the Calendar's date field. A note dropped on a day gets that date.
- A status boardGroup Cards by an option field such as Status. Drag a card into another column to change its status.
- The Journal as a side menuShow the Journal as a Side menu to step through its day pages, one at a time.
Limits
- Lanes and Side menu are offered only on ordinary pages, the Inbox and the Journal. Supertag pages and saved searches do not offer them.
- Trash, the Schema area and a field's own note have no views.
- Outline and Lanes do not apply sort or filter, though View options shows those rows on every view.
- Views are not in the Markdown copy, and a view change is not in Undo.
