Where a field shows
Placement sets how much of a field a note shows. A pinned field always shows, a default field shows on the page and under the note once it has a value, an optional field waits behind Hidden fields, and a hidden field is kept but not shown.

- The placement in the supertag’s Tag definition record, and in its settings list
Set a field’s placement
Placement is set on the supertag that binds the field. Open the supertag’s page, fold open Configure, click the type icon beside the field in the Fields card, and move the pointer onto Placement. Choose the placement you want, and the current one is ticked. Each choice has a tooltip that says what it does.
A change takes effect at once, is one undo step and needs no confirmation, because no value changes. A field that a parent supertag gives this one is placed on the parent instead.
What each placement does
| Placement | Under the note | On the note’s page |
|---|---|---|
| Pinned | Always shown. An empty pinned field shows Add value…. | Always shown, in the first group. |
| Default | Shown only once the field has a value. | Shown in Additional fields. |
| Optional | Not shown. | Listed under Hidden fields · N. Open the disclosure to see and edit them. |
| Hidden | Not shown. | Not shown. The value stays in Note details, in tables and in searches. |
Placement belongs to the field on that supertag, so every note with the supertag shows the field the same way. If two supertags on one note bind the same field, the most visible placement wins: pinned over default, default over optional, and optional over hidden.
Open and close Hidden fields
The line Hidden fields · N appears when a note has optional fields. Click it to show them. The line remembers only whether it is open in this page view. It is not saved in the note or the workspace, and it closes when you move to another page.
A required field that is optional is warned about only while its group is open. See Defaults and required fields.
Combine it
- Pinned fields and the outlineA pinned Status shows on the row of every task, so you can read and change it without opening the note.
- Hidden fields in a tableA hidden field still appears as a table column.
- Optional fields in a searchA hidden field still takes part in saved searches, because placement changes only what shows.
- Required and placementA required field gets its warning on the page only when its placement shows it there. A hidden field gives no warning.
Limits
- Placement is per supertag. Each note’s fields come from the supertags it has, and a field no supertag gives a note stays under Additional fields.
- Placement changes only what shows. The values stay as they are.
- An inherited field is placed on the supertag that gives it. Change it there.
