Superliner

Known limits

What Superliner does not do today, in one list. Each item says what happens instead, where that is useful.

Scope
Mac only. Every limit here is a limit of this version.
Read-only
A workspace saved by a newer build, or one with damaged saved history, opens read-only.
Fixed numbers
The sizes and counts below are the current ceilings.

Writing and notes

  • Undo is kept in memory and is not saved in the workspace. It is empty when you open the workspace again.
  • Undo is refused while text is being composed with an input method. Finish the composition first.
  • Deleting a note for good does not erase copies that older saved history or backups still hold.
  • Delete Permanently and Empty Trash keep a note that a supertag, field or saved search uses. It stays in Trash, and so does a note a supertag's template made while its owner exists.
  • Built-in pages, and notes that are a supertag, field or saved search, cannot take a checkbox.
  • Indent and Outdent work on several notes only when they are consecutive siblings.
  • Move Note… cannot leave a reference behind when a selected note is itself a reference.
  • Formatting is not offered in a code note. Links inside a code block are not clickable.
  • Links keep only web addresses (http and https), mail addresses (mailto) and links to notes. Other addresses are dropped.
  • A heading or a divider cannot be set on a code note, and a heading cannot be set on a quote or a divider.
  • The numbers of a numbered list use a fixed size and do not follow the text size.

Copy and paste

  • Paste as Reference works on notes copied from a selection. Text copied from inside a note pastes as text.
  • A code note takes pasted text as text, with its line breaks, and creates no notes from it.

Tables and code blocks

  • A table has at most 64 columns and 2,000 rows. A note holds one table.
  • Cells hold text. They do not calculate.
  • The table in a note is not the Table view. Its rows are the note's own grid, not the notes below it.
  • A note longer than 45,000 characters, or with more than 1,000 lines, is shown in the code face but is not coloured.
  • A language saved by a newer build shows its name as stored and is drawn as plain text.
  • Spelling checks, automatic correction and text completion are off in a code block, and the inline triggers do not open in one.

Pages, views and panes

  • A window has one second pane at most.
  • The Trash and Schema pages are built-in pages, and they do not take new notes.
  • Recents keeps the last 20 pages.
  • Nested notes in the Table view show only as a count beside the name, not as rows.
  • The Lanes view draws up to 20 lanes. The others are counted, and the page can be opened as an outline to see them all.
  • Each list in related content shows up to 50 notes, then a line says how many more there are.
  • A supertag's fields are on its page, not in the sidebar.

Supertags and fields

  • Removing a supertag from a note never removes a field value, a child or a note.
  • A supertag in Trash does nothing until you restore it. It is not listed in the sidebar or the browser meanwhile.
  • A supertag cannot extend itself or form a loop with its subtypes.
  • Defaults and starting values apply only when a supertag is applied. A change to them never reaches a note that already has the supertag.
  • Required is a warning in this version. Nothing blocks saving.
  • Placement changes only what shows. The values stay as they are. An inherited field is placed on the supertag that gives it.
  • A Text field holds plain text. Bold, italics and links are not offered in a field's value.
  • A Number accepts a plain number. Exponent notation such as 1e3 is not accepted.
  • A Tags or Option value can only name the field's own options.
  • A change to a field's type applies to every note that has the field. The count is shown before anything changes.
  • Clearing a value does not delete the field from the note.
  • Date ranges need a newer build. Older builds refuse a workspace that holds one.
  • Colours and pins are workspace settings, not note content.

Automations and child templates

  • Automations never delete a note. Their steps add or remove supertags, set field values and change checkboxes.
  • A supertag can have up to 20 triggers and 20 command buttons, and each rule up to 20 steps.
  • Command buttons cannot be renamed. Remove one and add it again to change its name.
  • A rule's steps cannot refer to a note. Note, list and Tags fields are not offered in Set field.
  • Automations do not run for Undo or Redo, for an import, or for the copies a template makes.
  • The Markdown copy writes each rule as a sentence. Edits to the Markdown copy are not read back.
  • A template is copied when the supertag is applied. Changes to it never reach existing notes.
  • One application copies at most 2,000 notes. A template that would copy more is refused whole.

Saved searches and the palette

  • A search with no conditions lists nothing.
  • The results of a saved search are not owned by it, so a result has no New Note and no Remove.
  • The palette's search covers the text of each note and the cells of its table.
  • Inline triggers need a space, the start of the text or opening punctuation before them. They do not open inside a link or a web address.

Files, backups and export

  • A workspace saved by a newer build, or one whose saved history is damaged, opens read-only. You can read, search and back it up, but nothing is saved and no Markdown files are written.
  • A workspace whose folder is read-only opens read-only, with a notice.
  • The Markdown copy is written for other tools to read. Changes made to it are not read back.
  • The app does not encrypt the notes in the workspace folder.
  • Keep one writer for each workspace folder. Do not edit the saved files by hand, and do not let a sync service write the folder from two Macs at once.
  • Attaching needs a workspace that is not read-only. A read-only workspace still shows and previews its files.
  • A file is not removed from the workspace folder while a note or saved history still names it. Moving a note to Trash does not delete its file at once.

Import

  • Import reads OPML and Markdown. Pictures and attachments are not copied: an image becomes a link or its description.
  • A note keeps its created and edited times only when the source states them. Otherwise they start at the import.
  • Files are read with size and count limits. Links that lead outside the chosen folder are skipped.
  • Import is refused in a read-only workspace.

Platform and scope

  • Superliner runs on the Mac only.
  • A workspace can be open in one copy of Superliner at a time.
  • While a workspace window is open, a menu-bar item and a system-wide shortcut open Quick Capture. Both are off until turned on in Settings ▸ General.
