Table
The Table view shows a page's notes as rows, with their fields as columns. Use it to compare many notes, sort and filter them, and change a value in many notes without opening each one.
- Where
- View ▸ Show as Table, the page's … menu, or the view tab's Show as menu
- Keys
- ⌘A selects every row, ⌘Backspace moves the selected rows to Trash, ⌘Return toggles their checkboxes
- Cells
- Arrow keys move, Return edits, Space toggles a checkbox
- Markdown copy
- Nothing extra. The table is a view, so each note's own Markdown is unchanged.
Read the rows and columns
Each row is a child of the page. A reference shows as a reference. A child with children of its own shows a count beside its name. Press ⌥→ on a row to show those notes inside it, and ⌥← to close them again.
- Name is always shown and cannot be hidden.
- Done appears when any row has a checkbox.
- Fields come in the order their supertags declare them, then fields that only some rows carry, by name.
- Created and Edited are hidden until you show them.
Show, hide and move columns
Open the Columns menu in the table's own bar. Each column has a checkmark when it is shown, and choosing one toggles it. Drag a column header to move it. Name stays first. The order, widths and visibility belong to the view, so they are kept for this page and do not change any note.
Sort rows
Click a column header to sort by it. Click the same header again to reverse the order. Hold ⇧ while you click to add the column as a further sort key, up to four keys in all. Columns ▸ Clear Sort removes every sort key.
Filter rows
There are two ways to narrow the rows, and both can be on at once.
Filter a column by text
Choose a column in the Filter column menu above the table and type in the box that reads Filter with the column's name. Only rows whose value in that column contains the text stay. Filters on several columns combine. Clear Filters removes them.
Add conditions
Click Filter in the view bar, then Add filter, and choose a condition kind. The rows are the same as a saved search's, except Relation, which a table does not offer. Up to 12 conditions.
Edit cells from the keyboard
Use the arrow keys to move between cells. Return or a double-click starts editing the cell. Esc cancels. Tab saves and moves to the next cell, and ⇧Tab to the previous one.
- [[←]][[→]]
- Move between visible columns
- [[Return]]
- Edit the cell. On a Created or Edited column, where nothing can be typed, it opens the note.
- [[Space]]
- Check or uncheck a Done cell, or toggle a Yes/No field
- [[⌘Return]]
- Toggle the checkboxes of the selected rows
- [[Esc]]
- Cancel the edit in progress
A name edits in place as one undo step. A name you change becomes plain text, though it keeps the bold or italic style it had. Use the outline for links and mixed formatting. Other cells open the same editor the note's own page uses.
Add, open and remove notes
New Note adds an empty row. On an ordinary page the note goes to the end of the page. On a supertag's table the note goes to the Inbox with the supertag applied, and the row's name is ready to type. A saved search's table has no New Note, because its results are not its own to add to.
Select several rows with ⌘A or by clicking and shift-clicking. ⌘Backspace moves them to Trash as one undo step. On a saved search's table, Move to Trash is not offered, and a result stays in its own place.
Group rows
The Group menu splits the rows into sections. It groups by the Done column, by a Yes/No field or by an option field, and by supertag. A Yes/No field has two groups, Yes and No. A row with no value falls into No. Collapse all groups and Expand all groups are in the same menu. Rows without a value sit in the last group.
Calculate a column
Each column can show one calculation in the footer. The choices depend on the column. Name offers Count all, Count filled and Count empty. Done offers Count filled and Count checked. A number field adds Sum, Average, Min and Max. A date or timestamp adds Earliest and Latest. Created and Edited offer Earliest and Latest too.
A supertag as a table
A supertag's page can show as a table. Its rows are the notes that carry the supertag, and the notes that carry a supertag which extends it. Columns ▸ Direct only narrows the rows to the notes with the supertag itself. Its columns start with the supertag's own fields, even before any note has a value. Configure #Supertag under the table opens the supertag's sections, and View ▸ Show as Table brings the table back.
Combine it
- Open tasks as a tableShow a saved search as a table, then group by Done. Open tasks sit in their own section.
- Group by checkboxCheckboxes on each row give the Done column and its grouping. Space checks a row from the keyboard.
- A tasks table for one supertagTurn on Direct only on the #task page to leave out notes that only inherit the supertag.
- The same dates on a calendarA date field that a table sorts by can also be the Calendar's date field. Both views read the same values.
Limits
- Only checkboxes, Yes/No fields and option fields can group rows. Other columns cannot.
- A sort uses up to four keys, and a view holds up to 12 filter conditions.
- The text filter is a plain contains test on one column.
- Changing a view is not in Undo, though each edit made in a cell is.
