Images and files

Attach a file

Choose File ▸ Attach File…, pick one or more files, and click Attach. The files land after the row you have selected, or at the end of the page when no row is selected. Each file becomes a note of its own, named after the file. A notice says “Attached 2 files.” with an Undo button, and one Undo removes every attachment from that choice.

  1. Pick the place

Select the row the files should follow, or click the end of the page.

  2. Choose the files

Choose File ▸ Attach File…, or type /, choose Image or file, and pick the files.

  3. Check the rows

A picture shows a thumbnail. Any other file shows its icon, its kind and its size.

Open and Show in Finder sit on the row. Right-click the row for the same commands.
Other files show the icon Finder would use, the kind and the size.

Drag files in, or paste a picture

Drag files from the Finder onto a row to make them notes under that row. Drop them between two rows to place them there, or onto the page to add them at its end. A pasted picture or file is attached after the row you are editing. Files are never typed into the note as paths.

Open, show or preview a file

Open gives the file to the app your Mac uses for it. It opens a read-only copy, made in a folder for this session, so an app that saves in place changes only that copy. The stored file stays as it is. Show in Finder selects the stored file in a Finder window. Quick Look shows the file in the system preview panel.

Esc
Selects the note the attachment row belongs to, as it does for any note.
Space
With an attachment selected, opens Quick Look. Space in its name still types.

The same three commands are in the Note menu: Open Attachment, Show Attachment in Finder and Quick Look Attachment. They work in a read-only workspace too, because they only read the file.

When a file is missing

If a file is no longer in the workspace folder, its note says “Missing attachment”. Open reports “This attachment is missing.” and suggests restoring a backup that has the file, or deleting the note.

Limits

  • One file can be up to 1 GB.
  • Attaching needs a workspace that is not read-only. A read-only workspace still opens, shows and previews its files.
  • A file is not removed from the workspace folder while a note or saved history still names it. Moving a note to Trash does not delete its file at once.
