Child templates

A child template is a note that a supertag adds under every note that gets it. Apply #Meeting to a note and the Agenda, Decisions and Action items notes appear under it, ready to fill in.

Add and arrange child templates

Open the supertag’s page and fold open Configure. The Child templates section lists the templates in order, with an Add a child template field at the foot. Type a name and press Return to add it. Click a template’s text to rename it in place.

Each template’s menu has Move Up, Move Down and Remove. It also has Open, which opens the template note as a page. A template is an ordinary note there, so you can give it children, a checkbox, supertags and field values, and nest templates inside templates.

Templates appear in the order they are listed.
Open shows the template as a page.

What a copy gets

When a supertag is applied to a note, each template under the supertag’s page is copied under that note, once. Each copy is an ordinary note. It keeps the template’s text, children, field values and checkboxes. A copy that carries a supertag gets that supertag’s own defaults, checkbox and templates too, down to three supertags deep.

A subtype gets the templates of its parents too. A single application copies at most 2,000 notes. A template that would copy more is refused whole, so nothing is half applied.

Notes that already have the supertag keep their children

Editing a template changes only the copies made after the edit. A note that already has the supertag keeps its children as they are, and a template is never followed again for that note.

If you move a copied child to Trash, applying the supertag again does not bring it back. Superliner remembers that the copy was made.

New children get a supertag

Behavior ▸ New children get names a supertag to give every new note made under a note with this supertag. Pressing Return at the end of such a note makes the new note carry that supertag. Each new note gets that supertag’s fields and templates.

Every new child under a project is a task.

Limits

  • A template is copied when the supertag is applied. Changes to it never reach existing notes.
  • A single application copies at most 2,000 notes.
  • A note value that names a note inside the template points to that note’s copy in the new notes.
