A tour of the window

The window has a sidebar on the left, the page in the middle, and two optional columns: the inspector on the right and a second pane beside the page. This tour names each part and the key that reaches it.

The line at the foot of the sidebar

The sidebar lists where your notes are, from top to bottom. The name of the workspace at the top opens its menu. Below it are the search field, which opens the palette, and the fixed rows:

RowWhat it does
TodayOpens today's page. ⇧⌘D
JournalShown when the workspace has a Journal, after Today
InboxThe page for new notes
SupertagsThe supertags browser, with its supertags and fields

TrashNotes you moved to Trash

Below the fixed rows come Pinned pages, Recents, the Workspaces you have added, Searches, and the list of supertags. Click a row to open its page. Pinned pages are the ones you pin from the sidebar's menu or Go ▸ Pin Page.

The top bar

The top bar runs across the window. The left side has the sidebar toggle, Back and Forward. The middle shows the page's title, then the workspace's name. The right side has the buttons for the current page:

⌘N
New noteA draft on the current page, or in the Inbox when the page cannot hold notes
⇧⌘T
Tags and FieldsThe supertags and fields of the selected note or the page
⌘K

InspectorShows or hides the right column

Open Beside, the second pane's button, sits here too. Hover a button to see its name and shortcut.

The breadcrumbs show the path of notes that leads to the page. Click a segment to open that note. A long path shortens to “…”. The page header also holds the title, which you can edit in place, the supertag chips and the fields. The notes of the page follow.

The “…” menu at the right of the page header holds the page's commands, such as Add Field, Tags and Fields, Show as Table, and Open Beside. On the Trash page it holds Restore All.

The page footer

Each page pane ends with a thin footer. On the left it counts the notes on the page, with their to-dos and how many are done. On the right it lists three keys: Return for a new note, Tab for indent, and Command-Return for a checkbox.

The status line

The status line sits at the foot of the sidebar. It reads Saved when your last change is stored, Saving… while a change is being written, and an error with a Retry button if a save fails. In a read-only workspace it reads Read-only. Click it to see details, including whether the Markdown copy is up to date.

The inspector

The inspector is the optional column on the right. Show it with ⌥⌘I. It has three modes, and the menu at its top chooses one:

ModeWhere it is availableWhat it shows
Related contentNote pagesThe notes that link to the page, and the notes that mention it without a link
ConfigureSupertag, field and saved search pagesThe settings of that page
DetailsEvery pageThe selected note's details, with its Details and References tabs
⌥⌘IShow the inspector, then press the shortcut again to hide it.

The second pane

Open Beside splits the page area in two. The new pane shows the selected note's page, or the current page when no note is selected. Each pane keeps its own history, so Back in one pane does not move the other. Choose Open Beside from the top bar, the View menu, the “…” page menu or a note's right-click menu. Choose it again, now named Close Beside, to close the pane.

Open Beside adds a second pane with its own history.

Limits

  • A window has one second pane.
  • A read-only workspace shows the status line as Read-only, and its editing commands are off.
