Lanes
Lanes show each child of a page as its own column, with that child's outline inside it. Use them for a few parallel parts of one page, such as one column per project area, and write in each column as you would in an outline.
- Where
- The view tab's Show as menu, or View options ▸ View as. Not on the View menu.
- Offered on
- Ordinary pages, the Inbox and the Journal
- Limit
- 20 lanes are drawn, and the rest are counted
- Markdown copy
- Nothing extra. The lanes are the page's children, so the Markdown copy does not change.
What a lane is
Each child of the page becomes a lane, in the page's own order. A lane is a column with three parts: its title, which is the child note's name; the child's own outline; and + Add note at its foot. A reference to a note makes a lane too. The lanes sit side by side, and the row scrolls sideways when they do not fit.
Write in a lane
Each lane is a full outline. Return, Tab, Shift-Tab and the other outline keys work inside it, as they do on a page. Only one lane takes text at a time, so clicking into another lane ends the edit in the first.
Click the title at the top of a lane to rename it. The title is saved to the child note itself. The title is refused while the workspace is read only.
Add a note to a lane, or a new lane
+ Add note at the foot of a lane starts a new note in that lane, as a child of the lane's note. + Add lane at the end of the row creates a new child of the page, as one undo step, and its title takes the cursor so you can type the name.
When there are more lanes than fit
At most 20 lanes are drawn. A page with more children shows an N more lanes marker at the end of the row, with the words Open this page as an outline to see every lane. Outline shows all the children as an indented list.
Sort and filter
Lanes take no sort and no filter. They show the children in the page's own order, so the Filter and Sort buttons are not offered. View options still lists Sort and Filter for this page, and they change nothing here. To order or narrow the children, use the Table, Cards or List view.
Combine it
- A project with one lane per areaMake each project area a child of the project, then show the project as Lanes. Each area's tasks sit in its lane.
- One child at a timeSide menu shows the same children as a list, with one page open beside it. Use it when the lanes are too many to read side by side.
- A reference as a laneA reference to a note under the page makes a lane that shows the note's own children. Editing it there edits the note.
- The Inbox as lanesThe Inbox can show as Lanes, so each captured note can have its own column to write under.
Limits
- Lanes are not offered on supertag pages or saved searches.
- No sort and no filter reach the lanes.
- At most 20 lanes are drawn.
- Lanes are not on the View menu. Choose them from the tab menu or View options.
