Today and the Journal

Today is the page for the day you are in. Opening it writes nothing. It becomes a note when you type in it, so a day you never write in leaves nothing behind. Day pages make a journal you can step through.

Open today
Go ▸ Today, ⇧⌘D, or the Today row in the sidebar
Step days
⌥⌘← and ⌥⌘→ on a day page
Any date
Go ▸ Go to Date… (no shortcut)
The Journal, titled with the date, for example 2026-10-14, and tagged #day

Open today

Go ▸ Today, or the Today row in the sidebar, shows today's page. The title is the date in the form 2026-10-14. Today is your local day. If you have not written on this day, the page shows “Nothing for today yet” under the empty note, and a link to yesterday when yesterday has notes.

Opening the day writes nothing. The page only exists once you type a note in it.

Step through days

On a day page, ⌥⌘← opens the previous day and ⌥⌘→ the next. Each opens that day's page if it has one, or the empty day if it does not. Go ▸ Previous Day and Go ▸ Next Day are enabled only on a day or week page. On a week page the same keys step by week, and the menu says Previous Week and Next Week.

⌥⌘←⌥⌘→Stepping through empty days creates no pages.
Click a day in the row to open it. A dot marks a day that has notes.

Go to any date

Go ▸ Go to Date… opens a calendar and a field. Type a date and press Return, or click one in the calendar. The field reads tomorrow, next fri, +3d, this week, a full date such as 2026-03-07, and a week such as 2026-W43. A date it cannot read is explained in place, and the popover stays open.

The date opens the same way as Previous Day and Next Day: a page if it exists, else the empty day.

This week

Go ▸ This Week opens the page for the current week, numbered as ISO weeks are: week 1 is the week with the year's first Thursday, and weeks start on Monday. A week with no page opens as an empty week, as a day does. Nothing is created until you type in it.

Where day pages are kept

Day pages are ordinary notes. They sit under the Journal, a built-in page, in date order with the oldest first. A page is found by its tag and its date, so moving it elsewhere keeps it as that day's page. Settings ▸ Journaling chooses another supertag for day and week pages, and Show Journal opens the Journal.

Quick Capture to Today also creates the day page when there is none. See Quick Capture.

Combine it

Limits

  • A day with no note has no page in the workspace, so it does not appear in the Journal or in a search.
  • Day and week pages take their supertag from Settings ▸ Journaling. A new choice applies to pages made after it.
  • Previous Day and Next Day are not available on other pages. Use Go ▸ Go to Date… there.
